I cannot believe that David Dein, the driving force behind the modern Arsenal,
has left the club.
A very quick track back has come up with this list...
- Signing of Dennis Bergkamp & David Platt
- Recruitment of Arsene Wenger
- Nike deal
- Move to Ashburton Grove
- Entry to the G14
...and I am sure many more that I have missed.
Ok so he was a bit orange, but his relationship with Wenger was pivotal to the success of the club. And despite numerous assurances coming out of Emirates at the moment, I think Wengers position is far from secure.
The general consensus is that a possible takeover by American Stan Kroenke is behind the departure and I have to say that looks the favourite. Maybe Dein has been wise enough to see that further investment is needed to get the Gunners back on track on the field.
Whilst it is an amazing stadium, Emirates has clearly affected our ability to compete in the transfer market prompting our reliance on youngsters. Maybe Dein thought that we needed Kroenke to keep us in the "big 4"...
Either way he has gone now, the board has reiterated its insistence that they stay English owned, which I agree is great in principle, but will it still be practical when the club are not filling the stadium and having another few seasons like this one?
Suddenly one of Dein's greatest legacies, the stadium, could be his biggest white elephant.
